Working from home: 'How can I ensure I’m not overlooked for opportunities & even future promotion?'
Listener email: 'Just about everybody in my office has been working from home since March, and it has been going fine, if a little challenging with the kids. I was hoping to be brought back into the office, when some people could return a few weeks ago, but was told I was to remain working remotely indefinitely. However, they did bring several people from different departments back and it already feels as if being at home will be detrimental to my progression now. Two big projects, both of which I would have been in the running to head up, have been given to people who are back in the office, well, one who has been there the whole time and one who recently returned. I’m not sure if I was even considered for either of them, I've also been left out of a couple of impromptu meetings – that seem to be had when something comes up unexpectedly. I am still included in scheduled meetings on zoom as always, but by then lots of decisions seem to be made. There doesn’t seem to be any plans to return anymore of the staff until much later in the year, if at all, and apart from the worries about how it will impact my career, I just miss working in the office. How do I approach this with my boss? Should I try and persuade him to let me back in to the office, or simply raise my concerns? Or could that be taken up badly by him? How can I ensure I’m not overlooked for more opportunities to show my worth and even future promotion? Is anyone else in the same boat?'
