Why do we celebrate the Summer Solstice?

It’s billed as the longest day of the year – or the shortest night – the Summer Solstice in recent years has brought people from all over the world to some of our sacred sites marking this occasion. However, traditionally its origins lay in more localised community get-togethers, crossroad gatherings and particularly bonfires to mark the feast of St John.
