Why did Ireland give Israel 10 points at Eurovision?

Austria took home the Eurovision crown on Saturday night, with Ireland failing to make it to the Grand Final. But, more shockingly, the Irish public awarded Israel 10 points, and the Irish Jury handed over 7. Is Ireland’s support for Israel stronger than we realised?
