Turn FOMO Into JOMO With These Simple Steps

It's time to embrace the Joy of Missing Out The Fear of Missing Out isn't a new concept. FOMO, as it's more commonly known, has been around since the early 90's but has definitely gained traction with the digital era and smartphones in particular. But what is it that people are really missing out on? And how can they learn to embrace Joy of Missing Out (JOMO)? As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, Dermot and Dave chat to Digital Wellness Consultant (and co-founder of QuokkaWellness.com) Carrie Budds for #MindYourselfNow Carrie talks us through the varying degrees of FOMO and reveals the worrying results from an NUIG academic study focused on the idea. To help us overcome this infliction, Budds has these simple steps to help prevent information overload and hinder internal triggers: Don’t overbook yourself - Learn to say 'No' Avoid using your camera, or apps that use the camera function Turn off social media notifications when you’re with friends/at an event Do it together - Encourage your friends/family to do the same so that you’re all present in the moment Don’t believe all you see online (or in messages) - People normally put their best foot forward on the net Be less reactive - Don’t let your actions or plans be driven by external forces. Focus on what you want to do Think of it as disconnecting as a form of self-care. Carrie is running a Digital Wellbeing Workshop in Galway on October 17th. Click here to find out all about the event.
