Survey Finds Work Of Stay-At-Home Parents Is Worth €44,000 A Year

A new survey estimates that the work done by stay-at-home parents is worth a wage of €44,000 a year. The survey of 1,000 people was carried out by Royal London. It found that an estimated 30 hours a week is spend on childminding, with 15 hours dedicated to cooking, eight hours to cleaning, four hours to handiwork and one hour to gardening. It was also estimated that parents make approximately ten trips a week driving their children to and from various activities, and spend five hours a week helping them with their homework. Is the work of stay-at-home parents undervalued, and can you put a price on it? Charlie Weston, personal finance editor of the Irish Independent, and Jen Hogan, Irish Times parenting columnist and mother of seven, joined us to discuss this.
