Subway Sandwiches Are Too Sugary To Be Legally Classed As Bread

Are you a fan of Subway sandwiches? According to a Supreme Court ruling, you may not actually be eating bread. The court found that the franchise's heated sandwiches contain too much sugar to meet the legal definition of being bread. Subway's Irish franchisee, Bookfinders Ltd, had argued that the bread should be exempt from VAT as a staple food. However, the Value-Added Tax Act 1972 provides that the amount of sugar in bread should not exceed 2% of the weight of flour in the dough, whereas the bread in Subway's sandwiches has a sugar content of 10% of that weight. Mick Clifford and Brianna Parkins joined us for The Week Trending to discuss this and more of the stories making the news this week.
