Predicting Volcanic Eruptions

In 79AD Mount Vesuvius erupted engulfing the nearby city of Pompeii in volcanic ash and pumice. This event was so sudden and so unexpected that it famously entombed much of the city’s population in their homes, their final moments forever frozen in time.  But despite the fact that volcanic eruptions can be extreme and incredibly powerful events, they are also difficult to predict. Dr. Shane Cronin, Professor of Volcanology at the University of Auckland joined Jonathan to discuss the difficulties in predicting these events and his work on detecting eruptions before they occur.
