One Third Of Female Students Say They Have Been Forced Into Having Sex
One third of female students say they have been forced into having sex, according to the results of a national survey.
NUI Galway's Active Consent Programme carried out the survey in partnership with the Union of Students in Ireland (USI). It was completed by 6,020 students from 21 campuses and focused on their experiences of sexual violence and harassment in higher education institutions.
Of those surveyed, 29% of females, 10% of males and 28% of non-binary students reported non-consensual penetration by incapacitation, force or threat of force during their time in college. Many said they had not disclosed the incident to anyone prior to taking part in the survey.
To find out more, we were joined by Dr Pádraig Mac Neela, Lecturer at NUI Galway School of Psychology, and Roisin O'Donovan, Vice President for Welfare at the Union of Students in Ireland.
