One In Ten Irish People Say Migraines Have Cost Them Their Jobs

Migraines can be extremely debilitating for a lot of people, with one in ten Irish people claiming they have cost them their jobs. Approximately 10-12% of the population is affected by migraines, and they are three times more common in women. As well as headache, they can be characterised by nausea and an intolerance to light and sound. Some people find that over-the-counter painkillers and lying down in a dark room helps ease their migraines. However, for those who don't respond well to this treatment, there are migraine-specific medications available. Dr Eddie O'Sullivan, GP and clinical director of the migraine clinic at Cork University Hospital, joined us for our weekly medical consultation to discuss what can be done about this condition.
