Nutritionist Calls High Sugar Content In Subway Bread 'Surprising'

It's rare that sandwiches end up being discussed in the courtroom, unless it's about lunch, but this week The Supreme Court made a very interesting decision in relation to the bread used in the famous Subway sandwiches. And it all comes down to VAT. Galway-based Bookfinders Ltd, a Subway franchisee, argued that it was not liable for VAT on some of its products including their famous sandwiches. The argument stemmed from a definition of bread as a stable food which ensures its zero-VAT status. However, the court has ruled that because the bread used in the sandwiches has a sugar content of over 10% of the weight of the flour included in the dough, this would not be the case. Speaking to Dermot and Dave, nutritionist Elsa Jones said she was 'surprised' to hear that the bread had such a high sugar content and revealed some other food that might be considered to have 'secret' sugar.
