Do We Need To Update Our Hate Speech Laws?

The killing of George Floyd by police officers in the United States has ignited a worldwide conversation about racism, and has caused Irish people to reflect on how we treat cases of racism here. The Department of Justice has planned a review of the Prohibition of Incitement to Hatred Act (1989). Barrister David Perry, one of the authors of a submission made by the Bar of Ireland last December, joined us to talk about why the legislation needs to be updated. We also spoke to Daniel McConnell, political editor with the Irish Examiner, about the criticism of Green Party leader Eamon Ryan for repeating the N-word while quoting from an article during a speech on racism.
