A widespread surge of allegations of sexual abuse/harassment, particular in the work place, incriminating many powerful public figures followed after allegations were made against Harvey Weinstein in October 2017. The empowerment movement marked a break from the silence, shame and fear which had kept many women from speaking up sooner.
