The links between sport and brain damage laid bare

While concussion in sport is a very topical issue, a new study has found more links to brain damage including dementia and Motor Neurone Disease. A 22-month research project by the University of Glasgow’s Brain Injury Group also discovered that there was a five-fold increase in the risk of Alzheimer’s, and a two-fold increase in Parkinson’s. Dr Chris Luke is Adjunct Senior Lecturer in Public Health in UCC and he joined Ivan in our studios in the Republic of Work, while it was also a pleasure to be joined on the line by Dawn Astle, daughter of former England striker Jeff Astle, who developed dementia and died in 2002 aged 59 - caused by heading heavy footballs.
