Last Word Retro: Paul McGrath On Racism In Soccer

The Black Lives Matter movement was reignited by the death of George Floyd earlier this year. People all over the world joined the protest, including many footballers. Former Republic of Ireland international Paul McGrath joined us on the show last year. At the time, Raheem Sterling was becoming an influential voice and somewhat of an unofficial spokesman for a generation of footballers on race, class and society. Sterling had previously challenged the British media's perception of black players and took the lead in calling out racism in both English and European football. In this interview from our archive, Paul McGrath talked about his own experience of racism in the game and how he felt things are for players today.
