Lack of Secondary School Places in Malahide

A lack of secondary school places is causing concern in parts of Dublin. We were joined by Lyn from Malahide, who has been unable to get a place for her daughter, who is on the wait list Malahide Community School. The Department of Education have told Newstalk Breakfast in a statement that they use a geographical information system to identify where the pressure for school places across the country arises. With this information, the Department is able to determine where additional school accommodation is needed at post-primary level. The department say that a new 1,000 pupil post-primary school was established in 2018 in the area and that the requirement for new schools will be kept under on-going review and in particular will have regard for the increased roll-out of housing provision as outlined in Project Ireland 2040.
