Should James Joyce’s ‘House of the Dead’ be preserved and not developed into a hostel?

A proposal to develop a 56-bed hostel on the site of James Joyce’s ‘House of the Dead’ has been met with criticism. The Dublin 8 site, along the quays was once home to Joyce's great-aunts and the setting of his short story 'The Dead'. The proposal has generated a backlash from the arts community. Almost 100 writers, artists and academics have signed a letter calling on Culture Minister Josepha Madigan and the council to ‘save’ the house. What do you think? Are we losing something important? Senator David Norris who is one of Ireland’s leading Joyce scholars and was also instrumental in establishing the Bloomsday Festival celebrating Joyce every year on June 16th joined Ciara as did some of our listeners to give their thoughts on the proposal.
