Is It Time To Start Removing Racism From Our Screens?
The removal of several TV shows from catch-up and streaming platforms has brought the debate about depictions of race on screen to the fore.
Little Britain, Fawlty Towers, The Mighty Boosh, The League Of Gentlemen, Bo Selecta and Saturday Night Takeaway have all had episodes removed from streaming platforms for racially inappropriate content, while concerns have also been raised about one Father Ted episode for its depiction of Chinese people.
Gone with the Wind became another topic of discussion when HBO announced it would be temporarily removed from HBO Max. It will now return, but with a disclaimer placing it in its historical context.
What is the right way to address how race is depicted on our screens? And does cancelling or removing TV shows and films take away from the really important issues?
TV presenter Baz Ashmawy, journalist Larissa Nolan and Dr Ebun Joseph, race relations consultant and lecturer in Black Studies at UCD, joined us to debate this.
