HSE Issue Alert Following Four Stillbirths Potentially Linked To COVID-19

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn has said that NPHET has been made aware of four preliminary reports of stillbirths in Ireland that could potentially be associated with a condition called Covid Placentitis. He also said that these reports should be interpreted with caution as the coroners have not concluded their findings. Research published on Covid Placentitis describes it as an "uncommon but distinctive complication of maternal COVID-19 infection", and says that just 11 cases have been notified internationally. The research also found that most women who develop COVID-19 while pregnant have a positive outcome. Fergal Malone, Master of the Rotunda Hospital, joined us to discuss this further. We were also joined by Priscilla Lynch, clinical editor of the Medical Independent, to discuss progress on vaccinations.
