Hidden Histories: Reflections on the Life of Austin Currie

In 1968, The Guardian newspaper praised “a bright young Catholic MP with a flair for publicity” – his name was Austin Currie. Much has been said and written about Austin in recent days, following his passing at the age of 82 and understandably, much of it focuses on his involvement in the process of creating peace and reconciliation. Yet in those earliest days of a political career came a simple protest that would influence politics north and south in the years that followed – the occupation of an empty home. It propelled the name of Austin Currie to the top of the British news cycle and arguably created the Civil Rights movement. Gavan was joined by Donal Fallon for another episode of Hidden Histories to discuss.
