This week, the world has watched the events in Afghanistan in horror. The Irish government has announced that the country will accept around 200 refugees from the war-torn country. However, Ireland’s historical relationship with refugees fleeing war is complex. It's defined by the acceptance of relatively small numbers, given our own size and historic economic woes. In the 1950's, the world found itself in major crisis, as some 200,000 people fled from Hungary.
