Fewer Children Than Ever Before Smoking And Getting Drunk

A new NUI Galway study highlighting trends in children's health behaviours over 20 years has revealed a decrease in the number of children smoking and drinking. According to the report, 5.3% of young people said they were smoking in 2018 compared to 22.6% in 1998, while 19% reported having ever been drunk in 2018 compared to 33% in 1998. There was also a decrease in the numbers reporting cannabis use, with 8.5% in 2018 compared to 12.3% in 1998. Dr Colette Kelly, Co-Principal Investigator at NUI Galway's Health Promotion Research Centre, and psychotherapist Stella O'Malley joined us to discuss these findings.
