Is It Ever Acceptable To Hit A Child?

Is it ever acceptable to smack a child? In the latest issue of the Irish Medical Journal, Professor Alf Nicholson of Temple Street University Children's Hospital argues that smacking a child is not an effective way to alter their behaviour. He also cites research from the United States which shows that smacking children is linked to long-term harmful effects in later life, including suicide attempts, moderate to heavy drinking and drug use. A 'smacking ban' was introduced in Ireland in 2015, but how do parents feel about it as a way of disciplining children? We spoke to author, journalist and mother of seven Jen Hogan, freelance journalist John Mallen and Anne Kehoe, member of the Psychological Society of Ireland.
