How To Avoid Earache When Flying

The air pressure associated with flying can have a number of effects on our health, including earaches and headaches. Dr Ray Walley joined us for our weekly medical consultation to tell us how to avoid these problems. Pain in the ears, which is predominantly experienced during landing, is often due to a lack of pressure equalisation in the middle ear. It can be avoided through activities such as chewing or yawning, while some people with sinus problems may benefit from decongestants. If you are suffering from an ear infection, it shouldn't prevent you from flying as long as treatment has been started. It's important to talk to your GP if you are on any medications or have a history of blood clots. Pregnant women should also see their GP for advice on when to avoid flying.
