20 Most Influential Moments: 9/11

As we edge towards the end of 2020, we’ve been asking Newstalk listeners what the 20 most influential moments of the last 20 years are… It’s been two decades since the Millennium and in that time, we’ve had political upheaval at home and abroad, technological advances and significant social change… We had the first Black President of the United States, the Queen in Croke Park, a new currency, a global financial crash, a pandemic… Over the next four weeks, we’re focusing on one of the Top 20 each day – and today, it's 9/11. Joe Ryan, a Limerick businessman who was flying to Florida as the attacks happened tells Sean Moncrieff about how he was stranded in the town of Gander in Newfoundland when flights were grounded around the world. Mark Cagney talks to Colin Clark, Author of ‘After the Caliphate’ and Chris Phillips, Former Head of the UK National Counter Terrorism Security Office. Pat Kenny hears from Shashank Joshi, Defence Editor at The Economist, about the rise of terrorism around the world in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. Robbyn Swan, co-author of ‘The Eleventh Day,’ speaks to Shane Coleman from her home in West Cork while Andrea Gilligan hears from callers about their memories of that day 19 years ago.
